Itinerary:

Day 1

Morning Session – Airboat Adventure

Board an exhilarating airboat and skim across the water to a hidden oasis where ospreys fish. The ride itself is an unforgettable experience, taking you to a place few have ever seen. Capture the drama as ospreys plunge into the water and emerge with their catch. There is also a small wading bird rookery so you never know what type of birds will be flying right by your lens.

Note: Tripods are not allowed on the airboat due to space constraints. You can only bring what fits in your lap.

Lunch Break – On Your Own. We can provide plenty of great places to eat some delicious food. All you have to do is ask.

Afternoon Session – Pontoon Boat Owl Excursion

Return for a tranquil pontoon boat excursion as we shift our focus to the elusive world of owls. As the light softens, you’ll have the chance to photograph these secretive birds in their natural habitat.

Note: Backpacks and monopods are okay on this leg of the Adventure.

Day 2

Morning Session – Osprey Nesting Colony

Explore the largest nesting colony of ospreys in the Southeast, home to over 300 pairs. You’ll witness the entire cycle of life as these raptors build nests, feed chicks, and fly in with fresh fish. This portion of the lake and tour always captivates every person on board.

Lunch Break – On Your Own

Afternoon Session – Atlantic Ocean Finale

Our final session takes place on the open ocean, where ospreys dive for fish in saltwater. Each catch is a mystery. I have documented over 35 different fish species in this area, and you never know what’s coming up next. The action is fast, wild, and unforgettable.

Tripods are welcome.

Cost: $2000.00 per person.

What You’ll Learn

This workshop isn’t just about putting you in front of great birds—it’s about helping you capture them with confidence.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Photograph fast-moving birds in flight
  • Track and shoot birds skimming the waterline
  • Compose clean shots even with messy or busy backgrounds
  • Anticipate behavior so you’re ready before the action happens
  • Understand light, timing, and positioning in the field
  • Capture sharp, emotional images that tell a story

I’ll be sharing my extensive knowledge of bird behavior—so you’re not just guessing, you’re predicting what’s about to happen.

And if you’re interested, I’ll also teach you how to shoot professional-quality wildlife video, from settings to movement, and how to build footage that tells a full narrative.

Clothing – Be Ready for Layers and the Elements

Mornings can be chilly, so make sure you’ve got something warm to start the day. But Florida doesn’t stay cold for long. Once the sun’s up, it heats up fast—so dress in layers you can peel off as the day goes on.

You’ll also be in the sun a lot, especially on the boats, so bring sun protection:

  • A hat (wide-brim or secure ball cap)
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunblock

You’ll be out on the water, in the wind, and moving between shade and sun all day. Plan for comfort, flexibility, and protection.

Photography Gear – Bring What Helps You Nail the Shot

You don’t need a prime lens, but if you’ve got one—like a 400mm or 600mm—you’ll be glad you brought it. That said, a variable zoom is incredibly useful, especially something like a 200–600mm or 180–600mm. The action happens fast, and flexibility matters.

Here’s what I recommend:

  • Two camera bodies – Don’t get stuck if one goes down.
  • Plenty of batteries – More than you think you’ll need.
  • Plenty of memory cards – Wildlife shoots eat space fast.
  • Long lens – The longer the better.
  • Zoom lens – Ideal for boat work and birds in tighter quarters.
  • Tripod/monopod – Allowed on every session except the airboat.
  • Lens cloths – Boats, splash, humidity… they’ll get used.
  • Waterproof cover or dry bag – For gear protection on the water.
